Loro Parque
You cannot go anywhere on Tenerife without seeing an advertisement for Loro Parque.
There are ads on the backs of the luggage carts at the airport, on the waste bins in
the towns and cities, on all the taxis, and pretty much everywhere you look.
The first time we visited Tenerife, it seemed to me that Loro Parque must be some
kind of tourist trap, so, we avoided it, even though it's just outside of Puerto de la Cruz
and you can walk to it if you're up for a half-hour hike. Or you can take the yellow train
that cruises through the town with great regularity. But, I was wrong.
This trip, because the weather was highly unfavorable for beach activities, we did tourist
stuff, including Loro Parque.
I'm glad we did, actually. Loro Parque, as it turns out, is one of the most amazing captive
animal/fish/bird places I've ever seen. Normally I am not a big fan of zoos. I hate seeing any
animal in captivity.
But, despite arriving with low expectations, I was impressed.
This company puts a lot of time, effort, research and money into the preservation of species
around the world. You can read more about what they do on their website by clicking here.
Especially for parrots. 'Loro' is Spanish for 'parrot'.
But, there were far more things than parrots to be seen at Loro Parque... Kudos to
The Loro Parque Foundation.
