Back to Tenerife

Aerial Shots

After being de-iced in Düsseldorf at 0600 we headed 2000 miles south
to Tenerife, hoping for warmer weather. We were in for a surprise. It turned
out that it was just as cold on Tenerife as it was in Düsseldorf! And that
Tenerife had its coldest winter in 80 years - complete with snow! None of the
buildings on Tenerife have heat, hotels included. We were headed toward an island
full of unhappy, chilly people, many of whom had just experienced their first
taste of a real winter, and we had no idea.

We approached the island from the northeast end, with the Anaga mountain
range visible on the right. We would drive up and over that from one end
to the other, eventually following the ridge across the top from east to
west, in the following days.

We banked around the Anagas and landed at Aeropeurto Los Rodeos just outside
of Santa Cruz. The last several shots on this page are of our departure.
You can see our last peek at El Teide towering over the horizon, and a glimpse
of Grand Canaria, another island in the Canaries. The interesting thing to
note is that while that photo was shot from the plane, we were at a lower
altitude than we were when I shot similar pictures of Grand Canaria from
up by El Teide on Tenerife! There we were at about 8,000 feet, as opposed
to at about 3,000 feet and climbing in the plane...
