Food!

It has been said that one is what one eats. I wonder what that makes us...

Ulla is a fantastic cook. Here she has prepared a pork dinner with potato and broccolli, along with a tasty gravy

She's also great with pasta and sauces

I also cook. I'm in charge of steaks, burgers, omelettes and sandwiches. It's a good division of labor

Now and then we do go out to eat things like an omelete at Johnny D's

Or pomme frites with mayonnaise and ketchup from Dutch vendors in Germany. You have to pay extra for the condiments. I will never understand french fries with mayonnaise. Bleccch...

My meal at a brauhause on Birkenstrasse in Düsseldorf during the World Cup Final match in 2002, which Germany lost. But, the food was great and here we did not have to pay extra for ketchup and mustard

A sandwich like this one, which I concocted, is a foreign concept in Germany. I like to think that I introduced the sandwich concept to Germany, but, at least I know I introduced the sandwich concept to Ulla

Then again, a lot of the things I cook are a foreign concepts to me

But I have been known to serve up a tasty omelet once in awhile

This baby has ham, swiss cheese, fresh tomato, 4 eggs, no milk, strips of goude pikantje cheese and fresh chives across the top

And I love inventing sandwiches. This is a multi-grain rye bread with Remoulade on one side, German scharfe (sharp) mustard on the other, ham, tomato and swiss cheese. Flop one side on top of the other and call it a meal

Guinness is good food too

Especially with a burger, fries and salad

Then there are the things you cook up at 2:00am after a long night on the town

Fresh sausage slices, fresh tomato, Remoulade, whole grain bread and swiss cheese, all fried until the cheese melts

Airplane food is another concept entirely. It is in the airline's interest to keep you happy, healthy and fed for the duration of your journey, but, sometimes that is not very evident. A few shrimp, and something chickeny doesn't do me for 7 or 8 hours. I bring my own food

However, once you get where you're going, exploring the food there can be an incredible experience. This is a seafood platter outdoors in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. Everything on that platter was beginning a really bad day for itself that morning

Then there are the things you try that you've never eaten before. Here it was octopus, also on Lanzarote. Chewy and meaty on the outside and fatty on the inside, but, tasty

"It's only a burger..."

Damn...

When you're on the go and can't cook or take the time for a leisurely bite to eat, there is usually a fast food place around the corner, like this Burger King at the airport in Arrecife on Lanzarote

So, the question remains: What does all this food make us?

You tell me
